Robot Wars: Extreme Warriors marks the return of the Robot Wars format to the United States after many years of refinement in the UK. When I last competed at Robot Wars '97 in San Francisco the arena wasn't enclosed, there were no house robots, no fire and most importantly: it wasn't on cable television! All of these elements have converged through the work of production company Mentorn in the UK. In early 2001 plans were afoot to transport the UK show format to American television and announcements to solicit competitors went out through E-mail. Twenty five teams and their robots were flown to London in late-June for a week of filming before a live audience in excess of a thousand people. The US competitors not only had to keep their robots running but had to form strategies to deal with the UK robots as well as those from Germany, Italy, Holland and South Africa. Not to mention the house robots! The typical RWX competitor defies classification but they are all technical people that enjoy building things with their hands. Their occupations include software, electronics and mechanical engineers, stage technicians, students, executives, writers, teachers and just plain-old father and son teams. They are imaginative, resourceful and persistant. Robot Wars Extreme is the result of all their hard work and clever planning. Although shooting a TV show exposes the typical inventor to the world of dynamic scheduling their greatest resource is each other. This is no NASCAR scene where secrets are carefully guarded. Instead the competitors share tools and parts in the interest of advancing the event with the best working robots possible, as that produces the best battles. I've read that the monster truck scene is a lot like this which puts the Roboteeers in excellent company. The appearance of RWX on US television is part of TNN's larger effort to launch TNN: The Next Generation, a reinvention of itself involved in "pop television, pop stars and pop culture." If you enjoy watching RWX on TNN consider calling the TNN comment line at 1-888-POP-1090 and let them know.

| Who am I? |
|
My name is Dan Danknick, I was hired by Mentorn to work as the US technical liason in the months before RWX to help interested competitors get their robots geared up to meet the event rules. I didn't recruit competitors or have any say in who was invited to attend the event but I did work hard to make sure everyone had the best chance possible. The final phase of my role in this first RWX show was to fly to London and work on the Robot Wars Technical crew under the direction of Derek Foxwell. Outside of Robot Wars I am a competitor in BattleBots, BotBash and the NERC events. I build and sell a wide range of robot parts suited to the competitor as well as provide technical support and manufacturer representation at the events. You can read more about me here. |
