Of course you know about the amazing, low cost brushed
motor that Briggs & Stratton developed many
years ago – the Etek. John Fiorenza, former
principal engineer for B&S also developed a
brushless (permanent magnet synchronous) version.
It is capable of producing up to 15 HP (6 HP continuous).
It has a stationary three-phase motor winding, with
a very simple permanent magnet rotor – and
no brushes to wear out! The stationary windings,
or stator, consist of copper coils placed in a laminated
steel core. This is unlike other brushless motors
in use because the steel core is not made of individual
laminations pressed into a motor shaft. "This
motor uses a continuous strip of steel, wound like
a roll of tape” says Mr. Fiorenza. We say
“Rock on, John!” – and thanks
for such an awesome bit of engineering!

Commutation of the motor is through hall effect
sensors with an absolute maximum of 4,000 RPM.
If you’re not familiar with brushless motors,
you cannot
just hook them up to DC and make them spin –
you need a real three phase brushless controller
(one of which we sell below). Each motor contains
a serialized dyno plot (there is an example above
in the list of supporting documents). We also

Tony Buchignani and I have
used these 18v Dewalt motors to win a lot of fights
at BattleBots and BotBash over the years (Hazard,
Evil Fish Tank, War Machine, Wedge of Doom.) We
got tired of clunky mounting schemes so Peter Abrahamson
(Team Sinister) cooked up a super-cool solution.
This face mount for the plastic gearbox is the
hot ticket! It locks the torque clutch in place,
constrains the gearbox to keep it from bursting
and gives you an easy way to mount the motor. Plus
it places the output shaft at the proper height
to mate with the RCM200 pillow block. Included is
a cleverly designed shim for locking your gearbox
into either low or high speed.
These are made for the 18v motor and gearbox used
in the 995k
